Cheesecake for Champions

One word: cheesecake. It’s something that we all crave from time to time. Some like theirs plain, while others prefer to drizzle strawberry or blueberry sauce or other appetizing toppings over theirs. Some dessert connoisseurs even prefer a rich, flavored center. Whether it is layered or not, baked or unbaked, this is one dessert that is too enticing for “smaller slices.” As a result, those of us with less discipline tend to truly indulge in its rich, semi-soft goodness.

Reflecting on cheesecake from a culinary perspective, it’s amazing what a traditional mixture of cheese, eggs, and sugar with a base of crushed cookies or graham crackers can accomplish. If you haven’t provided such pleasure to your taste buds lately, you should certainly do so soon. Besides, we are in the middle of barbecue season—something we undoubtedly have the right to refer to summer as in Mississippi. Needless to say, cheesecake goes very well with barbecues. Being the popular dessert that it is, you’ll find it at get-togethers almost everywhere.

With the global crisis the world is battling from the effects of COVID-19, a highly communicable respiratory disease, we all deserve a little “something” to unwind and relax our minds. To momentarily “champion” something in our lives is a small, but necessary, achievement these days. Instead of worrying about what we don’t have control over, we can deflect our focus to what we frankly do have control over—finding ways to relieve stress, checking in with family and friends while physical distancing and wearing masks, and of course, occasionally treating ourselves to our favorite books, songs, movies, TV shows, and desserts. Cheesecake deserves to be on that dessert list.
